Step UP

Yesterday I was on one of my morning hikes. It was a loop trail and I determined to go up the way that has many larger rocks that require me to step up. I like going this way and alternate each leg as I climb the stepped rocks. I do this because I want both legs to be strong and balanced. But on this day, I missed the turn for the “stepped rock” direction. I was well beyond that turn when I realized I had missed it,  and was a little disappointed. I was really going to miss that challenge of the stepped rocks. I assumed that this other direction would not provide the slightly challenging hike I desired.  But within just a few seconds, I remembered that I had recently had the thought that I should take the backwards route sometime. This backward trail proved to be just what I desired; a challenge. It was steep and rocky nearly the entire way up.
I love my hikes…not just for the physical activity but for what I learn by listening as I climb. I can feel and hear a connection between my spirit and God.  When I say hear, I mean phrases, words and understandings come to me like downloads from heaven. And  on this particular occasion it occurred to me, to my spirit, that God was mindful of me. He knew that I wanted a good work out this day and a new adventure and so , He gave it to me! I was near to tears with the intense  understanding of God’s love for me. I felt that my simple desire was important to Him!

I also began to  recognized that this type of connection and understanding could not be happening without practice. You see, I had determined several month ago to incorporate some habits into my every day life that nurture my relationship with myself and with God.  ( I call it my daily Battle Plan, but that’s another blog entry on it’s own) Yes, just like any earthly relationship, this one also requires practice, focus and desire.  One of the things I practice doing is to act on every good thought. If I think of a person, I will reach out to them some way. It could be a text or call or even an offer of service. If I see a piece of garbage and feel prompted to pick it up, I do it.  If I listen to a talk or read a book and think of a person that might enjoy it, I share it with them. I say good morning to everyone along my hiking trail and I smile. And on this particular day, the question entered my mind “Can you see my light?”  and persisted with everyone I greeted.   I wasn’t always like this and I am NOT looking for praise. What I do desire, is for people to feel of God’s love through me. I desire to be an instrument or a window to His light and Love.

I have come to believe that our spirits are speaking to our minds much more than we recognize. We are not our mind , our mind is part of us,  but we are our spirit. And our Spirit needs to be the Boss. This happens with practice.   I believe that when we practice listening and doing what is truth and good without hesitation, 3 things happen;
1. We begin to hear/understand with more clarity
2. We are trusted with more promptings
3. We begin to discover our true purpose and message, and we will KNOW  it because  it will have the elevation of humanity at it’s core.

So this idea of “Stepping UP” is so much more than just climbing  rocks and boulders on a mountain. It’s about our daily conscious nurturing habits and desire that can bring us to a place of strength, balance, peace and JOY! It will take effort but the ups and downs along the path are just as wonderful as the view at the top!
